Nathan from Manitoba
After our only employee living in Manitoba relocated back to Ontario last year, we were left with a glaring gap in our map of Canada. We’re pleased to announce that Nathan Knowler has joined our team as a lead front-end developer. Nathan has worked with companies like Adobe and Apple, and brings deep expertise in the web platform and accessibility. And, he lives in Winnipeg!
This leaves only Saskatchewan, Newfoundland and Labrador, and the territories outside the reach of the silverorange empire.
Welcome to EM:RAP’s new CEO
We’ve been working with our friends at EM:RAP on their medical education platform for over 15 years now. For most of that time, Mel Herbert has been at the helm. Recently, Mizuho Morrison, DO has taken over the role as CEO at EM:RAP.
Dr. Morrison is a respected lecturer on emergency medicine, and is still a practicing EM physician (how many jobs do you have?). Congrats to Miz - we’re enjoying working with you.
You can hear more about Miz in her conversation with Mel on the Dirty White Coat podcast.
Our old friend Mel Herbert hasn’t gone far either (see below).
The Pitt, season 2
As we mentioned last fall, Mel has been contributing to the hit HBO series, The Pitt. Mel’s now a staff writer for the show. It’s been fun to see his name pop up in the credits.
The Pitt is great TV, though not for the squeamish. Those of us at silverorange who’ve worked on EM:RAP’s medical education websites and apps have seen (usually accidentally) our share of unforgettably graphic medical educational videos.
Mozilla’s mail migration
We’ve been helping Mozilla build and manage their mozilla.org website since the early days of Firefox. In addition to our regular web development work with them, we’ve also helped Mozilla out with some enterprise contact management infrastructure.
This winter, we worked with Mozilla to help modernize and simplify parts of their legacy email contact management system, gaining experience with the customer engagement platform Braze.
We’re happy to be able to continue to work with Mozilla in their mission to build a better Internet.
Taking CarPlay & Android Auto for a spin
In our work with EM:RAP, we help design and build the apps for iOS and Android that make it easy to listen to their audio and video education offerings.
In order to work on the interface design without sitting in a car all day, one of our lead designers now has a CarPlay-enabled dashboard screen on their office desk.
We’ve now launched support for both CarPlay and Android Auto to enable doctors to brush up on their continuing medical education by listening in the car.

Here are a few links from around the web that made the rounds of the silverorange Slack recently:
- Mike Swanson’s article on Backseat Software resonated with us. Mike talks about how modern apps seek too much attention for themselves, rather than helping you get your work done.
- Marcin Wichary’s post, Unsung heroes: Flickr’s URLs scheme, highlights how URLs are actually a form of user-interface that can be well (or poorly) designed. The early web photo service was a great example of clear and usable web addresses done right.
- Our own front-end dev expert, Maureen Holland, contributed to the venerable-but-irreverent HTMHell Advent Calendar for the second year in a row. This year, Maureen wrote about The Wonderful World of Web Feeds.
